Black Panther is a movie that has been anticipated by the african american community since filming began years ago. The movie stars Chadwick Boseman as the main character, protecting his country Wakanda.
The authors diction is carefully put together. It encompasses both direct quotes from the movie and an analyzation of different examples to show how hyped up us AA (African Americans) are about this movie. The author Tre Johnson describes it as “Finally getting what we’ve asked for” Johnson’s article can directly appeal to pathos. This article is packed with how past generations have felt about the underrepsentayion of Black people, such as when he would have to dress as the white superheroes, and “Rarely reaching for the black or brown Crayola crayons in my superhero coloring books.” And now , generations will be able to see themselves in everyday popular life. The tone is confident. When the reader reads this article, they feel empowered, like me. There isn’t any uncertainty in his tone, which I feel is great for an author to have. The purpose of this is to say that many people are happy with he outcome and want the results to keep on coming. https://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/black-superheroes-matter-why-black-panther-is-revolutionary-w509105

Melania and Michelle Last year as the Obama’s formally met with the Trump’s before the inauguration, Melania Trump handed Michelle Obama a gift. While this is a normal gesture for new and old first ladies to do, the internet went insane. There were tons of funny memes made of Michelle’s “uncomfortable” face at the time of the exchange, which we now know was COMPLETELY misinterpreted. The information presented in this article comes from The Ellen show, therefore the authors diction is not prevalent, only when narrating the video, that is neutral for the most part. What can be inferred is the level of emotional attachment, which is high because of how controversial this topic was and the author who goes by the name of Joyce Chen, seems pretty interested to report about it. Joyce Chen’s article appeals to Ethos, because she is getting her information directly from the person it happened to. “Obama smiled knowingly at the mention and nodded. "Oh, yeah. The Tiffany's box." Chem added this instead of excluding it to finally end all of the assumptions about what actually happened that day. Chen’s tone comes off as laughable, because at the end she adds “Watch the hilarious exchange in the video above.” A reader can not really tell whether Chen is choosing sides , and that is good for an author on such a big platform especially regarding politics. Joyce Chen’s purpose was to answer a long standing question about what really happened that day. Her audience would be social media users who were active at the time of the exchange. In a world full of hate right now, it’s good to have something to laugh about. https://www.rollingstone.com/glixel/news/report-lack-of-diversity-in-games-has-same-impact-as-racism-w516170
The topic of racism happens in a minorities everyday life. People who are experiencing unfortunate events usually try to find an outlet or an escape. Many of these outlets happen to be gaming, but is it really an escape?Gaming companies are lacking a big chunk of diversity. The games feature almost always and only straight white males, excluding many others. The authors dicton towards the topic of racism is very apparent that they are dissapointed. “desire for diversity” lets us know he agrees with a change in society. The author appeals to Logos because the use of cause and effect. The problem is lack of diversity, the only logical however not ethical reason is that “if a white male isn't a game's main character, displayed prominently in front of its box, the game won't sell well.” Hester also appeals to Logos again by using a series of tweets when the topic of cultural appropriation comes up when game creators try to be more diverse. “if your main character has tribal tattoos SO SHOULD YOUR CREATIVE DIRECTOR.” one user expresses. Hesters tone is very bitter. He explains the situation like it should have already been done- which is true. Hester making his tone like this will lead game developers to understand that people are disappointed. Overall, Hester’s purpose of this article was to expose racism in a way that we have never seen it before. The intended audience is game developers, hoping that they will make a change. Hesters argument is valuable to the advancement of society Cynthia brown is currently serving a life sentence at a Nashville correctional facility, she was 16 when convicted.
Now, what could a 16 year old be doing, to get a life sentence? At the time Cyntonia was sold into sex trafficking like many other unfortunate children. When Brown to enough courage to stand up for herself, she shot the man who was planning on soliciting her into sex trafficking. She was later convicted with murder. This was in 2004, more than ten years later more people are starting to find out about her story because it blew up sue to the immense social media platforms of Rihanna, Cara Delevingne and Kim Kardashian-West. Althea Legaspi used very specific words to go along with the factual evidence presented in her article. I could tell that she tried not to be biased, even though this topic is hard not to be biased on because it is a very emotional one therefore she appealed to pathos. Since Legaspi was factual, her tone was rather urgent, as if her underlying method was to get something to change immediately. Legaspi appealed to pathos to convey her point. Her point was that Cyntonia brown shouldn't be in jail and many of celebrities are using their platform to help. Using quotes from Rihanna's Instagram post "did we somehow change the definition of #JUSTICE along the way?? cause..... Something is horribly wrong when the system enables these rapists and the victim is thrown away for life! To each of you responsible for this child's sentence I hope to God you don't have children, because this could be your daughter being punished for punishing already!#FREECYNTOIABROWN #HowManyMore" Makes the reader feel some type of sad feelings for what has happened to Cyntonia Brown. This makes Legapi's attitude hopeful that the help of high profile people will make a change. In the end, Althea Legaspi's purpose was to get directly to the readers feelings without getting off topic, hence the use of evidence and research on when, where, and why Cyntonia Brown was convicted. Her goal is to use her platform (Just like Rihanna, Kim & Cara) for justice. Justice in America is heavily overlooked so the value of this article is one to pay attention to. http://www.rollingstone.com/culture/news/rihanna-kim-kardashian-west-rally-for-cyntoia-brown-w512578 IN JUSTA COUPLE MORE MONTHS the box office will be skyrocketing from a new film that has been in the making for what seems like forever. The Black Panther. You probably remember the cameo made by The Black Panther in one of the Avengers movie ( theres so many) however his time on screen was short and we are ready for the full story.
The authors diction is very creative. Johnson uses a decrriptive and imaginative tone to explain his metaphors. For example, "Yet Black Panther already feels different from all of this. Coogler has set out to do something with the modern black superhero that all previous iterations have fallen short of doing: making it respectable, imaginative and powerful. The Afro-punk aesthetic, the unapologetic black swagger, the miniscule appearances from non-black characters – it's an important resetting of a standard of what's possible around creating a mythology for a black superhero." The time taken to make these analogies throughout the whole article shows that the author is invested in this topic and attached in a way. However the authors tone was very blunt and disappointed. He was disappointed in the fact that the film industry always puts black people in the shadows. And poses questions similar to, when have you seen a major film star be a black male? The author mostly uses pathos. Johnson is emotionally connected to The Black Panther having major roles featuring Africans and African Americans. "As a child in school, I rarely reached for the black or brown Crayola crayons in my superhero coloring books; I have a lifetime's worth of Halloweens where I weighed how often I could or should dress as the white superheroes. I couldn't find ones that looked like me both outside of and underneath the mask." When I think of pathos I think of someone with similar views relating to the topic being discussed. When I read the bits and bots of this article I can totally relate to pretty much everything he says. Johnson is going for the effect of relating with people. Concluding the first paragraph, I said that the authors tone was blunt and disappointed. While he does seem to be very excited for next years new hit movie, he points out the flaws in the movie industry that has been going on for decades. "In the Nineties and the early 2000s, attempts to make black superhero movies tended to play like Blaxploitation-lite" Meaning well, they tried but failed. All in all, Johnson's purpose of this article is to let everyone know that Black people are unapologetically excited for this movie and that there are many reasons why. He does a great job at relating this back to how many other black people feel on the topic. His goal is to get the point across that its 2017, this should have already happened. His position is very valuable to the black community, on behalf of a black girl with dreams. http://www.rollingstone.com/movies/news/black-superheroes-matter-why-black-panther-is-revolutionary-w509105 October 27th is a day most have been waiting for for almost a year. Stranger Things, the Netflix original about a secretive government and the upside down returns.
'Stranger Things 2' Will Feature 'Shadow Monster' and 'Crazier' Action ScenesThe Author of this article, Joyce Chen conveys her diction by getting various amounts of information. I'd say that Chen is pretty stoked about binge watching a whole series once again. Someone who was not excited about season two would not use words such as "Beloved" and sentences such as "The buildup of season 2" or "Return of the hit Netflix series" Using words like so show the anticipation of the return of the show from viewers and the author. Chen uses Ethos to show that interest. She uses many quotes from the cast and directors to show her dedication to the show, and also to the article."The buildup to the October 27th premiere of Stranger Things 2 is fraught with questions and mystery and, according to show director Shawn Levy, very high expectations."It's definitely daunting," he told Entertainment Weekly. "The love for this show is so rabid." Chen purposely made the choice of using the quotes of primary sources to build up this sense of ethos. However, if Chen did not use ethos by maybe asking a random fan what they thought would be the outcome of season two, it might have lessened the severity of how dedicated and excited she actually is, and instead of Chen using ethos, it would be pathos. Sine this article is not long, and more of an informative article than a opinionated one, it is hard to make a judgement about the authors tone except that it is informational and informative. The purpose of Joyce Chen writing this article was to promote the Netflix original "Stranger Things" Also to provide facts to readers about what to expect in terms of dates, like Oct 27th, to have a direct impact on the reader. Even though the article is short, we can tell that Chen is excited for the new season and I believe her goal was to convey that while still remaining professional. Chen did an amazing job because Stranger Things is a show to die for. |
